Celebrating the Women of Sun Metals: Meet Lisa Van Neer

30th March 2026

Behind every part of our refinery is a team whose skills, expertise and commitment keep Sun Metals operating safely and efficiently every day. Among them are many incredible women building rewarding careers and making a valuable contribution across our business.

This International Women's Day, we're proud to celebrate the women of Sun Metals and the important role they play in helping shape our success. While the mining and metals industry has traditionally been male-dominated, we're seeing more women build successful careers across operations, engineering, maintenance, laboratory services, safety and leadership.

As part of our Women of Sun Metals series, we're sharing the stories of the talented women behind our operations. Through their experiences, you'll discover the many pathways into our industry, what inspires them in their careers, and the advice they'd give to other women considering a future in mining.

"Don't let a room full of men intimidate you. Your opinions and ideas are just as valid."

Lisa Van Neer's career is a testament to the opportunities that can be built through dedication, resilience and a willingness to embrace new challenges.

Beginning her journey at Sun Metals as a Trainee Operator in Casting, Lisa has spent the past 26 years building an extraordinary career across the business. Along the way, she has gained extensive knowledge of the refinery, its people and its operations, becoming a trusted leader and highly respected member of the Sun Metals team.

Today, as Procurement Supervisor, Lisa leads the purchasing team responsible for sourcing the parts, equipment and supplies that keep the refinery operating safely and efficiently. Her days are spent overseeing purchase requests, supporting her team and helping employees across site with procurement-related enquiries. For Lisa, one of the most rewarding parts of the role is finding solutions when they're needed most.

"I get a real sense of satisfaction when we're able to source an urgent part or expedite a delivery," she says. "Knowing we've helped keep the refinery operating makes the challenge worthwhile."

One of Lisa's proudest achievements came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when global supply chain disruptions threatened the availability of critical equipment and safety supplies. Through careful planning, strong supplier relationships and determination, she helped keep essential parts moving despite factory closures and shipping delays, ensuring the refinery had what it needed to continue operating safely.

Over more than two decades in the industry, Lisa has also witnessed the growing number of women building successful careers in mining. She believes one of the best ways to continue that progress is by creating more opportunities for women to develop and lead.

"There are more women working in mining than people might think," Lisa says. "We can all help by creating development and leadership opportunities, fostering a workplace where women feel safe and respected, and encouraging people to speak up when they experience dismissive behaviour."

Guided by the belief that patience, experience and resilience are the keys to making a real difference, Lisa has built a career that continues to inspire those around her.

We sat down with Lisa to reflect on the remarkable career she has built at Sun Metals, the lessons she's learned over the past 26 years, and her advice for women considering a career in mining.

Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your story and for your outstanding contribution to Sun Metals over the past 26 years. Your leadership, resilience and commitment to supporting our people and operations have left a lasting impact, and we're proud to celebrate everything you've achieved.
